Job Purpose:

To support the Senior Merchandise Director / General Merchandise Manager in all aspects of the buying process to bring in a selection of seasonal merchandise which ties in with the company’s strategic direction whilst maximizing the profit opportunities for the company.

Key Accountabilities:

In addition to following Pedder Group’s policies and procedures, key accountabilities include, but are not limited to:

Sales and Profit

  • To assist the buying team in achieving seasonal sales and profit targets based on the seasonal business plan
  • To negotiate with suppliers in a tough but fair manner to secure exclusive ranges / brands and optimize the profit margin
  • To monitor closely systems to control sales and stock levels in order to maintain seasonal target and increase the stock turn rate for own bought brands
  • To work with the stores to establish a balanced range of merchandise suited to the customer profile of store.
  • To work together with marketing to make recommendations for changes and improvements to maximize sales potential and profit within the store
  • To be proactive in understanding the competition, and take action to minimize any loss of Pedder Group market share
  • To determine pricing strategies for products/suppliers based on market reviews, competitor positions, supplier financials, etc.
  • To track and evaluate performance of all merchandise and review performance weekly with Senior Merchandise Director / General Merchandise Manager and DSMs in store
  • To provide monthly updates to relevant parties on key costs and expenses related to buying

Merchandise Management

  • To be innovative and to forecast upcoming trends by attending worldwide exhibitions
  • To be familiar with both local and overseas market situations and trends
  • To maintain a leading position in the market of products in its own category
  • To ensure timely delivery of merchandise and ensure consistent quality and quantity to stores
  • To monitor sales and manage the exception rate, taking decisive action to handle any issues
  • To monitor the performance of all suppliers, give timely feedback and handle issues related to supply and product quality
  • To carry out spot checks in inventory levels in store and work with DSM’s on any store operation issues
  • To be responsible for the maintenance and control of aged stock

 Relationship Management

  • To work closely with Visual Merchandise and Marketing to deliver the correct image to the end customer through the correct channels
  • To work closely with warehouse to maintain a timely delivery to stores
  • To demonstrate a desire to understand and communicate the latest trends and fashion to customers and staff
  • To manage the business relationship with the suppliers involved in their business category
  • To provide accurate knowledge and information to sales staff for them to communicate with the customers
  • To train sales staff in all aspects of their merchandise including product knowledge and visual presentation
  • To manage the vendor relationship to ensure that sales staff are trained in product knowledge and visual presentation for vendor products

 Team Leadership

  • To demonstrate and reinforce the Pedder Group Vision and Values at all times and provide the necessary leadership to gain commitment from buying team
  • To identify and execute ways to increase team member’s loyalty, satisfaction and pride with the Pedder Group experience
  • To reinforce the company message to the team and reinforce the need to drive profitability at Pedder Group through the merchandise mix and full price sell through
  • To provide on the job coaching to ensure that the direct reports are able to meet and exceed the requirements of their role
  • To identify and facilitate opportunities for additional training for the team
  • To monitor and review performance of direct reports with the Senior Merchandise Director / GMM, identifying individuals who are ready for promotion or require performance improvement plans
  • To take appropriate corrective action with team members who fall below standard (in consultation with HR department)
  • To complete and present performance appraisals based on defined goals and objectives for team members in a timely manner
  • To recognize, reward and celebrate success with the team, stores and vendors


  • Minimum 2 years of buying experience, preferably gained in sizeable organization
  • Good understanding of retail business
  • Self-motivated and able to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Good communication and organizational skills
  • Proficient in MS office applications, especially in MS Excel
  • Excellent command of spkoen and written English and Chinese
